Graduate Student Funding – Awards and Scholarships

Tips and Processes for Social Work Presentation:  https://breeze.ucalgary.ca/p82568298/

Eligibility for Graduate Scholarships is based on 4 major criteria:

  1. The program you are in – Social Work
  2. The degree you are completing – Master’s course-based; Master’s thesis-based; Doctoral; Post-Doctoral
  3. Registration status – full time or part-time
  4. Citizenship – Canadian Citizen; Permanent Resident; or International

There are 2 types of awards available to you:

  1. Program Recommended – you cannot nominate yourself for the program nominated awards and there is no application form that you are required to fill out; your supervisor would normally nominate you for these specific awards and you would need to coordinate with your supervisor if you are interested in being nominated, a one-page statement from the student and a Letter of Support from the supervisor are the only required documentation, both of which must be submitted directly to the Faculty of Social Work.
  2. Competitive – you must complete an application form and submit all required documentation directly to the Faculty of Graduate Studies .

Accessing Award and Scholarship Information:

If you are a registered graduate student at the University of Calgary, you can access the Graduate Awards Database directly through your MyUofC portal. Entering the database via your portal will allow you to view a filtered search of graduate awards based on your program of registration and allow you to save this information to your favorites list on your browser. Once in the portal, go to Student Services and Registration/Graduate Studies/Graduate Student Scholarships. You can view the Terms of Reference for each award to determine your eligibility. The link for the portal is: http://cas.ucalgary.ca/cas
NOTE: Scholarship values may not remain at the level currently posted in the Graduate Awards Database.
All scholarship correspondence to students is electronic – use the portal to ensure your email address in correct and current.

Program Recommended Awards:
Please note that the deadline date for nomination submission (includes one page statement from student and letter of support from supervisor) directly to the Faculty is earlier than the submission deadline date indicated on the Graduate Awards Database. This allows the Graduate Scholarship Committee to have enough time to review all nominations and determine who the final award winner will be. All final nominees are then submitted directly to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The Faculty of Graduate Studies will inform all winners via email. The Faculty deadline date for all Program Recommended Awards nominations is December 15. No late submissions will be accepted. Please read the Terms of Reference for each of the Program Nominated Awards to determine your eligibility.

Competitive Awards:

The Competitive Awards are administered directly through the Faculty of Graduate Studies. There is an on-line application form and required documentation that must be submitted as a complete package directly to the Faculty of Graduate Studies by the deadline date indicated on the Graduate Awards Database. No late submissions will be accepted. Any questions or inquires regarding the Competitive Awards must be directed to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Scholarship Officers. As mentioned above, if you access the Graduate Awards database through your portal, you will have access to a filtered list of awards available to you based on your program of registration.
A number of the Competitive Awards are classified under the “Special Awards and Bursaries”. Check the Terms of Reference to determine the Competition type, required documentation and what the application deadline date is. Examples of awards that are under the “Special Awards and Bursaries” category include: Captain Nichola K.S. Goddard Memorial Graduate Scholarship; CFUW/Calgary Graduate Scholarship in Social Work or Social Sciences (Canadian Federation of University Women), Doreen F. Wilson Legacy Graduate Award, Lorne and Pat Gordon/YWCA of Calgary Graduate/Undergraduate Award; and the Harry and Laura Jacques Bursary.
A number of Competitive Awards are also classified under the “Alberta Graduate Scholarship Competition”, the “Open Doctoral Scholarship Competition” and the “Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship Competition”. The Alberta Graduate Scholarship applies only to MSW students who reside in Alberta and have an Alberta mailing address. The Faculty of Graduate Studies determines who the eligible candidates are for this particular scholarship. All successful candidates will be asked to submit an application which will be sent to you via email by the Faculty of Social Work. The application must then be returned to the Faculty of Social Work for processing. No one, including yourself, can nominate you for this particular scholarship competition. The Faculty of Graduate Studies will then notify all successful award winners via email. With regards to the Open Doctoral Scholarship and the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship Competition, you yourself must submit an on-line application; in addition, all required documentation must be submitted directly to the Faculty of Social Work for review and ranking by the Faculty’s Graduate Scholarship Committee. The completed application packages and Letters of Support from the Faculty are then forwarded to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The Faculty of Graduate Studies then determines who the award winners will be and those winners are then notified via email.

Reminders:

Check the Graduate Awards Database on a monthly basis to determine what Scholarship and Award Competitions are available and which ones you are eligible to apply for.

Check the application deadline dates and make sure you submit all required documentation to the appropriate office by that deadline date.

Read the emails that are send to you regarding funding and award opportunities.

Make sure that your email address is updated and current.

Consult with your supervisor regarding any scholarships or awards that you would like to apply for (Competitive) or to be nominated for (Program Recommended).

The Graduate Calendar available on-line at the following link also has detailed information on Awards and Financial assistance located on page 205: http://grad.ucalgary.ca/calendar

Eligible thesis-based students are strongly encouraged to apply for funding through external sources including SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) and CIHR (Canadian Institute of Health Research). The Faculty of Social Work has had enormous success with SSHRC and CIHR funding in recent years and our future allocations are tied, in part, to current and the immediate past successes. The Faculty’s official policy is that we will not be in a position to recommend other sources of internal (University of Calgary) funding to any student who was eligible for SSHRC or CIHR funding but did not apply for one (the only exception being for year-one entry students). More information for SSHRC can be found through the following link: http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/funding-financement/programs-programmes/index-eng.aspx
